An SR-22 is a certificate submitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety providing proof of financial responsibility. SR-22’s are frequently required by the State of Texas when an individual without liability insurance is involved in an accident, arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, an illegal drug, or a controlled substance, or is otherwise found to be without legally required insurance coverage. Your insurance company will provide the state with advance notice before cancelling your coverage.
The State of Texas generally requires drivers to carry SR-22 insurance for 3 years. In that time, continuous coverage must be maintained. If there is an insurance lapse or cancellation, your vehicle insurance company is legally obligated to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Public Safety, and your license will be suspended
- A few Reasons you may need an SR-22:
1. A DUI or DWI or any serious moving violation
2. An at-fault accident while driving without insurance
3. Repeat traffic offenses or too many tickets in a short time period
4. A revoked or suspended license
